Professor Albert Hofman, MD PhD
Professor Albert Hofman received his medical degree from the University of Groningen in 1976. After this he pursued his scientific career and received a PhD degree in clinical epidemiology at Erasmus University in Rotterdam in 1983. In 1988 he was appointed as chairman of the Department of Epidemiology at Erasmus University, and since 1992 he is scientific director of the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences of Erasmus MC.
In 1998 he was appointed professor of Epidemiology (adjunct) in the Department of Epidemiology of the Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts. He is principal investigator of the Rotterdam Study, a large prospective cohort study that is being conducted since 1990 to investigate cardiovascular, locomotor, neurological and ophthalmological diseases. Professor Hofman is involved in studies of neurological and cardiovascular disease.
